A radiator that bangs just as the heating comes on can make a peaceful home feel anything but peaceful. The good news is that many radiator noise fixes are straightforward, particularly when the sound is caused by trapped air, a stiff valve or normal pipe movement. Other noises point to a heating-system issue that is best checked promptly, before a small fault becomes a leak or loss of heat.
Start by identifying the sound
The type and timing of the noise are useful clues. Listen when the heating first starts, while it is running, and as it cools down. Also note whether one radiator is affected or several rooms are involved. A single noisy radiator usually has a local cause. Noise across the house can indicate an issue with pressure, circulation or pipework.
Gurgling or bubbling
Gurgling normally means air has collected inside the radiator. Because air rises, the top of the radiator may feel cool while the bottom is warm. It can also stop the radiator heating efficiently, so the boiler has to work harder to warm the room.
Bleeding the radiator often resolves this. Turn the heating off and wait until the system is cool. Place a cloth and small container beneath the bleed valve, usually found at the top side of the radiator. Using a radiator key, turn the valve slowly anticlockwise until air hisses out. Once water begins to flow steadily, close the valve without overtightening it.
If you have a sealed heating system, check the boiler pressure afterwards. Bleeding releases a little water and may lower the pressure. Follow the boiler manufacturer’s instructions if it needs topping up. If the pressure repeatedly falls, do not keep refilling the system without investigation – this can be a sign of a leak or a problem with the expansion vessel.
Banging, knocking or clunking
A sharp bang can be alarming, but it is not always serious. Metal pipes expand as hot water passes through them and contract as they cool. If a pipe is tight against a floorboard, joist or radiator cover, that movement can create a knock or clicking sound. It is particularly common when the heating first comes on.
Where accessible, check that radiator pipes are not pressing hard against timber, skirting or loose floorboards. The lockshield controls flow and should not be adjusted at random, as it affects how the whole heating system is balanced.
Try turning the thermostatic valve up and down gently. If it feels stiff, does not alter the heat, or continues to whistle, its internal pin or valve mechanism may be sticking. A plumber can assess whether it needs freeing, servicing or replacing. Replacing an old valve can be a sensible repair, but it may involve draining part or all of the heating system.
Ticking or clicking
Gentle ticking is commonly the sound of pipes and radiator panels warming up. If it is brief and only happens as the heating changes temperature, it may not require repair. Persistent clicking from one location, however, can mean pipework is rubbing against a surface or a bracket is loose.
Check that the radiator is firmly attached to its wall brackets and that nothing is leaning against it. Never place heavy furniture directly in front of a radiator valve or cover it with thick fabric, as this can restrict heat and make the controls harder to access.

Before arranging a repair, there are a few sensible checks that do not involve dismantling the system. Start with the heating switched off and radiators cool enough to touch safely. Look for damp patches around valves, rust marks beneath the radiator and signs of water on carpets or flooring. Even a slow leak deserves attention.
Next, make sure the thermostat is set to a realistic temperature and the boiler is not showing a fault code. Check that the noisy radiator’s thermostatic valve is open and that its lockshield has not been knocked or closed during decorating, cleaning or furniture moving.
If the radiator is cold at the top and warm beneath, bleed it as described above. If it is cold at the bottom but warm at the top, sludge may have built up inside. Bleeding will not remove sludge.
